Lava fountains gushing at Halema’uma’u crater lava lake – Video taken during the Volcano Tour on April 27th, 2015

Since the lava lake in the overlook crater inside Halema’uma’u crater has risen to the rim of the overlook crater / floor of Halema’uma’u crater, visitors and Volcano Tour guests have been able get a direct view of the molten lava lake and it’s spectacular, gushing fountains. The closest overlook is just over 1 mile away from the lava lake but it is one of the few, safe places in the world where guests can experience this natural phenomenon.

The video was taken with an iPhone and no tripod. The lighting conditions for photo and video cameras are extremely challenging: small and fast moving objects at night about 1 mile away! The best viewing experience is live through very good binoculars. One more reason to join our Volcano Tour! Our local expert guides are equipped with high quality binoculars and they can also give you all the background information about what you are actually seeing and why it is so special.

To check the current volcano and weather conditions, please check our website or call us at 808 937 5472. We are here to answer your questions and guide you in the right direction so you can have the best experience.

Right after the sun is below the horizon and the soft glowing light in the sky caused from the refraction and scattering of the sun’s rays from the atmosphere appears, volcano tour guests and park visitors can witness the red reflections in the volcanic fumes leaving the lava lake. On a clear day, the first stars are also visible from that moment on. As it gets darker, the red glow will become more and more intense, even more so when there are more fumes emitted from the lava lake.

Since nobody can predict for how long this natural phenomenon will last (it started in 2008), we recommend to book tickets for the “glow show” soon.

Ask our guides for recommendations about the best flights, accommodations, island transportation and suggested itineraries for first time visitors as well as repeat guests.
